Today I have assembled the GR8Bit Slot Board. This is the second step in creating your own GR8Bit computer. Please watch this introducing video:

These are the components and the board you will need to assamble the Slot Board.

As you can see, this is a simple board, that will allow you to put the slot connectors somewhere in your computer housing that is accessable from the outside.

First you have to solder all the via’s on the PCB. On this board there are only 4. After the via’s It you can solder the resistor packs. Be aware of pin 1, cause the resistor pack RN1 is in a different possition than the other 2.

After the resistor packs you can solder the capacitors.

Now you can solder all the connectors. I started with the 50-pin connector on the component side. Fit the connector on the PCB and solder pin 1 & 50. After these 2 pins the connector will stay in place so you can solder the other pins.

After this connector do the same with the other connectors on the back of the PCB. Last solder the 3 & 4 pin connector.

It took me 20 minutes to assamble this board. Its quite straight forward, but be aware of the location of the notch on the 5- pin connector.

Check back soon for more updates.

Hi all,

Today I have assembled the GR8Bit CPU Board. This is the first step in creating your own GR8Bit computer. Please watch this introducing video:

The assembly of this board is quite simple and it took me 30 minutes, I will show you step by step how to assemble this board.

Step 1:
Use the components list to identify the components needed.
You don’t need all the components in the list to finish this board, please look at your GR8Book, to see what components are mandatory and what components are optional for further development.

Step 2:
Solder all the via’s on the CPU board. Now that there are no components on your board they are good accessible.

Step 3:
Solder all the ‘short pin components’ on the CPU board. These components are: CPU socket & Resistor Arrays.

Step 4:
Solder all capacitors on the CPU Board. The ceramic capacitors have no polarity, But be aware, that the electrolytic capacitors are soldered with the right polarity on the board. C5 is in the opposite position of C6 & C7.

Step 5:
Solder all resistors on the CPU board. Resistors have no polarity, bur I’m always putting them with the tolerance ring to the right (or top), cause we read from left to right. That’s also the way you have to read the color rings on a resistor.

Ok, there we have our first GR8Bit board. This one was quite simple. I hope you find this post useful. More of them to come. Here is an overview of the CPU board and my working space.

Have fun. keep learning and expand your horizon.

Regards,

Erik

After setting up my weblog, I also been testing with Facebook Integration. Still testing this,  but as far as I can see now, everything is working alright. :D

Finaly finished making this weblog. The reason why I made this weblog is, that I received a GR8Bit ‘build your own’ computer on the last day of 2011. Since I’m doing a lot of DIY electronics projects with my MSX computer, it looked like a good idea to make a blog about it.

I picked my GR8Bit package up at a fellow MSX enthausiast living in the Netherlands. The GR8bit it self is developed by Eugeny Brychkov from Russia.

This is what I’ve got:

The box contains some high grade PCB’s, that looked realy professional. All the solderpads and silkscreens sre realy of a good quality. Besides the PCB’s there are a lot of components and connectors. I think this will keep me busy for a while. I’m planning to finish the GR8Bit within a year. It’s possible to do this much faster, but cause I’m also doing my BSc in IT study I’m giving my self some slack.

If you are interrested please follow my blog. For more info on the GR8Bit platform, please visit http://www.gr8bit.ru
